Our team of compassionate radiologists and healthcare experts is committed to delivering safe, respectful and expert care to women across Auckland. Breast cancer is New Zealand’s third most common cancer and accounts for more than 600 deaths every year. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the higher the survival rate (and the less intervention required). Nine New Zealand women, on average, will hear the news today that they have breast cancer. Therefore, we encourage every woman to regularly get tested - because early detection is the best prevention against breast cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a breast screening?

Breast screening is the process of checking for breast cancer before symptoms appear. It usually involves a mammogram to help find any unusual changes to the breast tissue as early as possible.

Early detection can improve treatment outcomes and save lives, so it’s important to regularly get checked if you’re between 45-69.

Who is eligible for a free breast screening in New Zealand?

Free mammograms are available every two years to women aged 45 to 69. If you're under 45 and you would like a mammogram early, talk to your GP about early breast cancer screening or other options for a breast examination.

Can I get a breast screening under 45 years old?

Routine screening is not publicly funded for women under 45, but if you have a family history of breast cancer or specific concerns, you can request a referral for an early breast cancer screening by talking to your GP about your concerns. If they agree, you will be able to acquire a referral for an early breast cancer screening.

Where can I get breast cancer screening near me?

We offer mammograms at six of our clinics across Auckland. Breast screening services are available at:

Are breast screenings safe?

Yes! Mammograms use a very low dose of radiation and are considered safe for regular use in breast screening programmes. The benefits of early detection far outweigh the minimal risks involved.

How do I book a breast screening appointment?

To book a mammogram at Allevia Radiology, you will need a referral from your doctor if you are under 45 years of age. If you are between 45-69, you simply need to contact our team, and we can schedule your free breast screening appointment at the location of your choice - all we’ll need is the name of your medical provider.

What happens during a breast screening appointment?

Our team will guide you through the process, where you’ll need to answer a few questions. You’ll then receive your mammogram, which roughly takes around 20-30 minutes. We advise trying to book your appointment the week after your period, when your breasts are less sensitive, to make the process more comfortable for you.

If you’ve had a mammogram before at another imaging centre, please let us know, as then we will be able to compare your images to look for any changes in your breast tissue from previous appointments.

After your mammogram, our radiologists will review the images and send a report to your GP as to the findings and if any further action is needed.

Do I need a referral for breast screening?

If you are under 45 years of age, you will need a referral from your GP; however, if you’re aged 45 to 69, you can simply book an appointment with us directly.
